About the series

Realized during a residence in 2009, the Saint-Claude series opens out a false-panorama of the mountainous landscape which encircles the city. Composed for The Valley exhibition at the Abbaye museum of Saint-Claude in 2009, the prints were exposed in front of the museum bay–windows which opened a breakthrough on the mountain. This series proposed then a global vision of the landscape, mirrored by the viewer’s point of view, confronted at the same time with the object and its representation. The vertical size embraced the landscape, held at bay by the valley where from the pictures were taken, by offering a wider framing which allowed to look at the mountain in an overall view. As open out and put in flat on the wall, the massive and oppressive presence of the mountain was then reduced to a scale which gave to the spectator the possibility of seizing its totality in a single glance.
Beyond the scenography they were thought for, these pictures call out by their ethereal colors, haze rising from the mountain and the winter’s harsh light which transform the landscape into an aerial, light, impalpable world, in its dreamlike beauty, which induces to reverie and to contemplative rapture, as much as to meditation with regard to the place’s spirituality.
